Each year, the Chamber recognizes individuals and businesses that demonstrate exemplary service, leadership, and commitment to their profession and to the Indianola community. Kristy Brouillet Named Incoming President & CEO of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce

INDIANOLA, Iowa (October 2025) – The Indianola Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Kristy Brouillet as its next President and Chief Executive Officer. Kristy will begin the transition process on October 15, 2025, and will officially assumes the role of President and CEO on December 1, 2025.

For the past three years, Brouillet has been employed by the Chamber as an accounting lead and project manager, a behind-the-scenes role that has been essential to helping the organization run smoothly through the significant growth and change that the Chamber has seen. From helping manage finances and supporting membership systems to strengthening internal processes, she’s been quietly helping shape the Chamber’s foundation from within.

“We are very excited to hit the ground running with Kristy,” said Gretchen Schrock, of Gretchen Schrock Country Financial and Chair of the Chamber Board of Directors. “She has a good foundation of what we have been building at the Chamber and will continue to build on that while also refocusing on the roots.”

Brouillet has a long history in business management and real estate, bringing a strong grasp of financial systems and client relations to her leadership style. Before joining the Chamber team, she worked in accounting and operational management roles that honed her ability to connect numbers with people—skills that translate directly into community building.

Ryan Williams, of City State Bank and current Board Member, said Brouillet stood out from a strong field of applicants. “We had an exceptional pool of talented candidates, but Kristy truly stood out for her vision, leadership, and deep commitment to community growth,” Williams said. Andrei Murphy, Owner of Retirement Solutions of Iowa and current Board Member, agreed with Williams, “I’m confident she has the tools and the expertise to build lasting relationships and to promote prosperous growth.”

Amanda Ripperger, Owner of Sports Page Bar & Grill and Brickhouse Tavern and the Past Chair of the Chamber Board, echoed their sentiments. “Kristy definitely rose to the top!” she said. “I’m very excited for the opportunity to have her as our President and CEO. I also believe it speaks volumes about the stability of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce that we are able to promote from within.”

Having been a part of the Chamber team, Kristy is known for her strategic approach, being a team player, and having a steady hand.

“Our team at the Chamber was excited to learn that the Board of Directors had selected Kristy as the new President and CEO,” said Amanda Zwanziger, outgoing President & CEO. “She has been an important part of our team and has made such a difference over the past three years. We feel confident that she will continue to build on the momentum the Chamber has built and carry forward the incredible team culture that has been built over the last few years.”

Haley Swanson, Director of Chamber Experience, added, “I’m genuinely excited about this new chapter for the Chamber and can’t wait to see the great things ahead under her leadership.”

Zwanziger said Brouillet’s appointment comes at a pivotal time in the community’s evolution.

“As with Chambers throughout the country, the role of the Chamber of Commerce in the community has significantly evolved and will continue to as our community grows,” Zwanziger said. “It’s imperative that the leadership of the Chamber continues to have a seat at the table to foster conversations with members, partners and community leaders to help shape the future of our community. Kristy is the right person to be at that table. She’s strategic, intelligent, and will help make an impact on the economic and community vitality of Indianola.”

Zwanziger will be working closely with Brouillet and the Chamber Board and staff throughout the transition to ensure a seamless handoff of leadership.

“It’s been an honor to serve this organization and community,” Zwanziger said. “Our team is proud of what we’ve built, and we are confident that under Kristy’s leadership, the Chamber will continue to thrive.”

Indianola Chamber President Amanda Zwanziger Announces Planned Transition, Citing Personal Calling and Chamber’s Strong Momentum

INDIANOLA, Iowa — July 9, 2025 — Amanda Zwanziger, President & CEO of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce, has announced she will not renew her contract at the end of the year, concluding a transformational tenure marked by growth, innovation, and impact. Zwanziger will remain in her leadership role through the end of 2025 to ensure a smooth and strategic transition.

“This decision comes from a place of clarity and purpose,” said Zwanziger. “God is pulling my heart toward my deeper mission, helping individuals, organizations, and businesses clarify their purpose, overcome barriers, and find growth. I’ve always seen myself as a transformational leader, someone who comes in, innovates, builds, and leaves things stronger than I found them. I feel like I’ve done the work I was meant to do here. Now it’s time for the next leader to take it to the next level.”

Since taking the helm in late 2022, Zwanziger has led a Chamber reinvention that included the addition of value-added services resulting in more than 30% membership growth. She led the launch of the Experience Indianola brand, bringing Indianola exposure to hundreds of thousands of visitors, and transformed the Chamber’s brand and marketing, generating millions of social media impressions for the member-based organization. Under her leadership the Chamber also helped the community secure the prestigious Main Street Iowa designation, attracted numerous tour groups and meetings to the community, and significantly elevated the Chamber’s visibility through partnerships and a series of innovative strategies.

“Amanda’s impact on Indianola can’t be overstated,” said Gretchen Schrock, Chair of the Indianola Chamber Board of Directors. “She brought not only vision and strategy but also heart and hustle. We are incredibly grateful for her leadership and confident in the strong foundation she’s leaving behind.”

Zwanziger will continue to lead day-to-day operations, staffing, and strategic planning through the remainder of the year, while also advising the Executive Committee on the optimal leadership structure for the Chamber’s future.

“One of Amanda’s greatest strengths is her ability to transform an organization from the inside out,” said Amanda Ripperger, Past Chair of the Indianola Chamber Board of Directors. “Because of her bold thinking and relentless execution, the Chamber is not only stable, it’s thriving.”

Chamber leadership emphasized that the organization is financially strong, strategically aligned, and well-positioned to build upon its momentum in business development, tourism, community engagement, and regional collaboration.

Zwanziger added:

“This has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my professional life. My commitment to this community or the Chamber isn’t changing, and I plan to stay engaged in the future. I’m intentionally not finalizing the exact path I’m taking next, but I envision it will be a blend of pursuing my faith calling and continuing to make an impact in this community in some fashion.”

As she reflected on her time with the Chamber, Zwanziger emphasized that the impact has been as personal as it has been professional.

“What’s also hard to put into words is the personal side of this experience, the people I’ve met, the fun we’ve had, the challenges we’ve taken on together, and the community partners who’ve made this work so fulfilling. That part has meant the world to me. I’m not ready to be done with all of that, I’m just ready to be part of it in a different way.”

The Board of Directors will initiate a leadership transition process in the coming months.

“Our next leader will step into an organization that’s energized, connected, and respected across the region,” said Gretchen Schrock, Chair of the Indianola Chamber Board of Directors. “We’re looking for someone who can continue to cultivate strong relationships, champion local business, and build on the momentum we’ve gained.”

Indianola Chamber of Commerce to Host Two Key Business Events This May in Partnership with Regional Organizations

Substance Use & The Workplace: Training for Employers

Monday, May 6, 2025 | 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Lighthouse Community Center | 109 W Boston Ave, Indianola, IA

In partnership with WeLift Job Search Center and Employee & Family Resources of Iowa, the Chamber will host a training session titled "Substance Use & The Workplace" to help employers better understand and manage the impact of substance use in professional settings.

The event will provide valuable insights into:

· The substance use spectrum and its impact on the workplace

· Narcan training and overdose response

· Protecting employees through workplace policies

· Accessing to substance use and health and mental health resources

· Exploring data-driven approaches to build safer, more supportive work environments

“This event brings together practical insight, tools, resources, and real strategies that employers can implement right away,” said Amanda Zwanziger, President and CEO of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce. “We want to equip employers with the right knowledge to protect their people and create safe, supportive workplaces.”

Contracting Opportunities for Small Business: Supplier Development

Thursday, May 1, 2025 | 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Hubbell Hall, Kent Campus Center | Simpson College | Indianola, IA

The Greater Des Moines Partnership, in partnership with the Indianola Chamber of Commerce and the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) at Iowa State University are hosting "Contracting Opportunities for Small Business," a Supplier Development Lunch and Learn event designed to connect small businesses with key players in the local contracting ecosystem.

The program will include brief presentations from participating organizations on how to do business with them, followed by a networking session over a complimentary light lunch.

· Small Business Administration (SBA)

Jefferson Highway Heritage Byway to Host Public Meetings

to Host Public Meetings

The Jefferson Highway Heritage Byway Advisory Board is hosting public input meetings along its historic route in Iowa asking residents to share their thoughts on important assets and points of interest. From that input a Corridor Management Plan (CMP) will be developed.

This important meeting will be held Wednesday, May 23rd from 4:00-5:00pm at the Indianola Activity Center (2204 West 2nd Ave).

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) included the Jefferson Highway in their Scenic Byway program in 2018 and signs marking the route were installed in 2019. As part of the IDOT program, a Corridor Management Plan (CMP) is required to sustain this coveted DOT designation. Development of this plan requires public input from residents in communities where the highway travels.

This meeting will include a brief history of the Jefferson Highway and the Byway program before participants are asked to share their thoughts on important assets along the byway and within ten miles of the byway.

The Jefferson Highway travels through Worth, Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hardin, Story, Polk, Warren, Clark, and Decatur counties in Iowa, and roughly following Highways 65 and 69.

About the Jefferson Highway Heritage Byway: The Jefferson Highway Heritage Byway has been a part of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Scenic Byway Program since 2018. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) defines what is a byway as a route that has a high level of one or more intrinsic quality- Archaeology, Cultural, Historic, Natural, Recreational, or Scenic. Indianola Tourism Initiative "Experience Indianola – The Sky’s the Limit" Launches

[Indianola, December 15, 2023] — The Indianola Chamber of Commerce proudly announces the official launch of "Experience Indianola - The Sky's the Limit!" This exhilarating tourism website and captivating hype video series are set to showcase the big attractions Indianola is known for and the hidden gems that visitors have yet to discover.

"The tag line, ‘The Sky’s the Limit,’ reflects not only the iconic hot air balloons that grace our skies but also the abundance of experiences this amazing community has to offer,” said Amanda Zwanziger, President & CEO of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce.

The Experience Indianola website promotes Indianola’s staple events in the community and includes a calendar that will allow visitors and residents to stay in the loop on exciting events taking place throughout the year. Visitors will also be able to explore Indianola's hidden gems and iconic attractions through the narrative content and imagery provided throughout.

Descriptive immersive experiences are offered that appeal to interests of all types and an extensive directory makes planning visits to Indianola easy. It includes details about local eateries and establishments that will entice visitors to experience every bite and sip the city has to offer. In addition, the site encourages visitors to stay a while, offering up ideas for comfortable accommodations or a good camping spot.

In addition to the Experience Indianola website, the Indianola Chamber is unveiling a series of sizzle videos that will be used in a comprehensive marketing campaign.

“This is just the beginning,” said Amanda Zwanziger, “Today is phase one, the launch of the Experience Indianola website and hype videos. Phase two, which begins today, will include expanding existing features, building downloadable itineraries, enhancing the directory, and adding a section specifically for planners who want to bring groups and events to our community. Phase three, which will commence at the beginning of spring, will be an extensive Experience Indianola marketing campaign to recruit visitors for the upcoming heavy tourism season.”

The goal of the comprehensive Experience Indianola project is to spur economic development in Indianola. According to statistics that Zwanziger shared, just a 5% increase in visitor spending in the county would result in close to $5 million in visitor spending over the next three years. This kind of impact is why the City of Indianola helped fund the initiative in partnership with the Indianola Chamber.

"Embarking on this tourism initiative isn't just about attracting visitors, it's our key to unlocking economic growth,” said Zwanziger, “Every visitor is not just a guest, they are a contributor to the success of our local businesses and our community. If you own a small business and you want to ensure you bring in the most revenue possible in the next several weeks, there are a few things you must have in place. Just as Santa is making his list and checking it twice, you should do the same if you want to be on the “Nice List.”

Getting on the “Nice” Business List

When we talk about things you need to make sure you do in your business, it really isn’t about naughty or nice in a moral sense. But some things just make it easier to buy from or work with you. Ensuring you meet the following qualifications will help you bring in more revenue before the end of the year.

Stay open. People buy online because it works for their schedule. If you run a brick-and-mortar business and have limited or unpredictable hours, it’s hard to know when you’ll be open. If for only the holiday season, do your best to keep later hours and remain open more days of the week.
Be merry. If you’re trying to get people in the door of your business, make them feel welcome when they enter. You want to encourage browsing and repeat visits. Unfriendly manners or blank looks—or worse, staring at your phone—won’t bring them back.

On Small Business Saturday, participating businesses in Indianola will distribute Shop, Savor, Sip Passports to customers. Shoppers can embark on a journey through local merchants and establishments, earning stamps on their passports with each purchase. The more stamps collected, the greater the chance of winning fantastic prizes.

Indianola Hosts CITR Travel Iowa Marketplace

Indianola, IA – October 28, 2023

On November 2nd, Indianola will host the Central Iowa Travel Region’s Travel Iowa Marketplace event at Simpson College.

In addition to the Marketplace, the Indianola Chamber of Commerce will be hosting 15- 20 tour planners on a familiarization tour on Wednesday November 1st, sponsored by the Chamber, Hotel Pommier, and the National Balloon Classic. This tour includes the opportunity to experience Indianola’s hidden gems, promoting it as a must-visit destination.

The theme for the tour is Fly Through Indianola, where attendees will get to experience "flight” experiences throughout the day. Participants will kick off the day inside a cold-inflated hot air balloon for registration, accompanied by delicious beignets and bellini flights.

Participants will start the tour at the balloon museum at 10AM where they will get a sample of the tours that are regularly enjoyed by its guests. The museum exhibits over one hundred balloons, the first one ballooning in 1783 while more recent ones highlight modern-day hot air balloons.

The tour will then continue to Edge of the Woods Raspberry Farm. Attendees will get a tour of the farm and learn about the operations, as well as have the opportunity to sample jams berries and shop for some of the specialty products.

Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) is the next stop on the tour. While this is the lunch venue, participants will also be able to travel the halls and learn about the history of the opera that is decorated on the walls. To top the luncheon off, they will also receive a private opera arias performance.

Participants will then head to the Indianola Square where they will have the choice of an at-leisure walking tour of Indianola’s downtown, or a guided historical tour led by Indianola’s resident historian, Elodie Opstad. Highlights for the historical tour may include the story of George Washington Carver, the background on balloons and how they made their way to Indianola, how our downtown came to be and more. To enhance the planners experience even more, they will be provided with a Warren County Gift Certificate to spend, sponsored by Feed & Foster, Adorn, Corner Sundry, Savor the Rise, and Warren County Economic Development.

The tour will then regroup and head to Mish Mash for a honey tasting. The honey experience is provided and sponsored by Milk and Honey Orchard and Apiary founder Katie Flinn. Flinn trained in Bologna, Italy last November and December in Honey Sensory Analysis, and has a gained apprenticeship status with the Heroes and Hives program from Michigan State University in beekeeping.

The final stop will be at West Hill Brewing. Attendees will receive a flight of signature beers, carefully selected for their unique flavors to be paired with charcuterie offerings provided by Platters with Purpose. The crew at West Hill will guide participants through each pairing, providing insights as to why each texture and flavor combination makes the pairing special.

Following the Familiarization Tour, the planners will meet up with the Marketplace exhibitors at a reception at Hotel Pommier and participate in the Central Iowa Travel Marketplace event at Simpson College’s Kent Center the following day.

The Indianola Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Jay Byers, President of Simpson College and Andrei Murphy, Owner and President of Retirement Solutions of Iowa have been named to its Board of Directors.

A 1993 graduate from Simpson College, Byers has been in multiple leadership roles, including previously serving as the President and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership for the past 11 years. The Partnership became the fourth largest regional chamber of commerce in the country under his leadership, expanding to 11 counties and 24 Affiliate Chambers of Commerce with more than 6,5000 members. In addition, Byers has chaired the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives at the national level and the Iowa Chamber Alliance at the statewide level. Internationally, he served three terms as the U.S. representative on the International Chamber of Commerce World Chambers Federation General Council and was also a member the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of 100 for 11 years.

Byers understands the influence and role that a Chamber of Commerce can play in the economic growth and vitality of a community. His insight and leadership will play an important role, not only in the direction and growth of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce, but the relationship of Simpson College with the business community.

“I am a strong believer in the importance of Chambers of Commerce to the overall success of communities. I also believe that Simpson College needs to be a community leader and actively engaged in the Indianola Chamber of Commerce.” Byers shared. “A stronger city and business community makes a college stronger. Andrei Murphy, President of Retirement Solutions of Iowa LLC, is a local business owner providing insurance solutions and financial advisory services. Murphy has an extensive background serving in a board capacity, including serving as the current board chair of the Des Moines non-profit, “Rock ‘n Prevention.” Murphy’s involvement has included serving on Executive and Financial committees and providing strategic direction for organizations.

Murphy has been a very strong supporter of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce, as an investor and volunteer, and brings a wealth of knowledge that will help bring the Indianola Chamber of Commerce to the next level. In addition, Murphy is an outside the box thinker that is excited to help our community evolve.

Planned for Monday, June 5th

The Jefferson Highway Association (JHA) is hosting a special "Sociability Caravan" through Iowa, similar to the historic caravans of the past. The caravan will be arriving in Indianola on Monday, June 5 ^th , with a special dedication of historic signage in front of the former Hotel Warren (113 East Salem) at 1:45pm by Amanda Zwanziger, President of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce, and Mayor Stephanie Erickson. Everyone is invited to attend.

The Jefferson Highway Association signage, purchased by the Warren County Historic Preservation Commission, will include recognition for the following three locations:

- Hotel Warren,113 West Salem, where travelers overnighted in luxury

- Tourist Camp, between Simpson’s Barker and Wallace Hall on Buxton Street, where travelers overnighted modestly

- Hastie Gas Station, six miles north of Indianola, west side on Hwy 65/69

The Jefferson Highway was the idea of Des Moines’ Edwin T Meredith who believed the United States needed a north/south highway. Dedicated in 1916, with a Sociability Caravan stopping in Indianola, the Jefferson Highway runs from the pines of Winnipeg to the palms of New Orleans.

Touring by automobile a hundred years ago was a new experience and created business opportunities for every town and city along the roadway’s route. Indianola is the only location in Iowa, and one of few remaining, to faithfully recognize this historic highway with “Jefferson Way” naming the segment of Hwy 65/69 running through town.

(INDIANOLA, IOWA) – In the month of April, The Indianola Chamber of Commerce is celebrating a new Shop Local campaign, “Buy It In Indianola”, inspired by the slogan used by the early Chamber of Commerce (Indianola Commercial Club) in 1915. This campaign will be highlighting our community’s rich history in supporting local businesses leading into a Shop Local event on Saturday, April 29 ^th .

“Our early citizens in this community recognized the importance of supporting local business and the benefits that it would bring to them personally, and to the community,’ said Amanda Zwanziger, President and CEO of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce. “The “Buy It In Indianola” campaign will demonstrate the historical significance buying local has had on our community and how it still impacts us today.”

The campaign isn’t just based on a slogan from days past but will highlight the historical archives from the efforts of the early Chamber as demonstrated in an advertisement from November 18, 1915 in the Indianola, Iowa, Herald:

Pause, Reflect & Celebrate!

What are you grateful for? Now is the perfect time to reflect on the wonderful, positive things in your life. With the holidays approaching, I think everyone should press the pause button, give thanks, and remember why these things are important to you.

I am grateful that for the first time in several years that construction on the Indianola Downtown Square is complete. The Justice Center is open and so are all of the sidewalks and roads. This is a monumental moment for Indianola.

I am grateful for our local businesses who support our community in so many ways. Now, it’s our turn to thank them. What if we all focus on buying every gift this year from an Indianola business, no matter what? Here’s a few ideas on how to do just that:

1. Make your list of who you need to shop for, including something for our local charities.

2. Intentionally think of gifts you can give to those people from a local business. If you aren’t certain, take a stroll around town and visit some of our local businesses for creative ideas. Gift cards coupled with a favorite food or beverage wrapped in a lovely gift box or bag is a great gift. What about a basket full of gift cards from your favorite businesses?

3. Still not certain? Ask one of our local merchants for ideas. Utilize your personal shoppers who are more than happy and willing to give you ideas on finding that perfect gift.

We have a big shop local weekend Friday, November 25 & Small Business Saturday, November 26. As you celebrate the holidays with family and friends, be sure to celebrate and thank our local businesses who support our community in so many ways. When we support our local businesses, 68 cents of every dollar stays in Indianola to support our schools, roads, and other infrastructure projects. It definitely matters.

Believe it or not, I have been the President & CEO of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce for over 8 years. It seems like just yesterday that I started my journey that has been challenging, rewarding and a lot of fun.

Throughout the years, I have worked hard to make Indianola the best place to own a business, work, live and raise a family. Along the way, my work turned into passion, my passion turned into pride, and now I have a great deal of respect and gratitude for all of the people in this community who join me in believing that “Indianola’s the best.”

I am proud that the Indianola Chamber’s influence has been an integral part in defining who we are, what we represent, and where we want to go in the future. As current projects end and future efforts are taking form, our past accomplishments, coupled with the work we do today, have and will continue to positively affect the Indianola economy.

To accomplish the Indianola Chamber’s mission to foster a vibrant economic environment while enhancing the quality of life, I am proud of the relationships and partnerships I have built with many community investors and businesses, as well as the city and county to make Indianola a better place to live and work. Indianola will always be stronger and more successful when we all work together.

As a voice for local businesses, I have been proud to support a pro-business environment knowing that that our local businesses create the financial foundation for the community, and income development is critical for their success. Not to mention, they also are employers and depend on the Chamber and our partners to create a lifestyle that attracts the best employees.

But most importantly, I am proud of the town that Indianola has become and excited about the possibilities for the future. And, as progress continues, I can’t wait to see what happens next.

As for me, I am retiring as a proud President & CEO of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce. I have met some amazing people, made some life-long friends, and will leave this organization in the capable hands of a new executive and Board of Directors who will continue to focus on building a strong, thriving business community and remarkable place for our families to live.

I will never say good-bye to the place I have called home since before I graduated from Simpson College or to the people whom I have come to love. Instead, I will just say “see you later.”

The Indianola Downtown Square is Open for Business , despite getting some badly needed upgrades so our businesses and residents will have a safe place to gather. The good news is we are on the home stretch. Construction is completed on Buxton, Salem and Howard. Ashland between First Street and B Street will be closed approximately July 11 ^th with a construction goal of being completed by early November.

When you visit our businesses on the Downtown Square, remember that there is on-street and/or public parking lots available just one block off each side of the square. During each Phase of the project certain streets will be closed, but you can still access all of our downtown businesses. Watch for signage to help guide you. Once the roads are completed, the sidewalks will be replaced and you will still have access to your favorite businesses.

Remember, our loyal businesses have supported this community for years, and you can support them by continuing to buy local. Please continue to support them during construction. Follow them on Facebook as they provide you with instructions on how to visit them. If mother nature is kind Phase 3 will be done before we know it.

Businesses around town, too, are Open and ready to serve consumers who are enjoying summer. While workforce continues to be an issue for some businesses, it has gotten a little better. Yet, you still might find yourself standing in lines, have longer than normal waits or slower than normal service. Please continue to have patience and be kind. Instead of complaining, show your appreciation with a smile and some warm thoughts. Those workers and businesses are doing their best to serve you.

Summer is the best, and our events are in full swing and Open for Business. As we move into our event season, I invite you to take advantage of all of our local entertainment. Whether it’s enjoying a world class opera at the Des Moines Metro Opera (July 1 – 24), feasting on a corn dog at the Warren County Fair (July 27-Aug. 1), catching the breathtaking view as hundreds of balloons take to the sky during the National Balloon Classic (July 29-Aug. 6), or watching disc golf pros compete during the TruBank Des Moines Challenge there’s something here, in Indianola, for you.

It’s time to come out of hibernation and explore Indianola. Why not make a list of everything you can do to “BE" Local this summer? Here’s a few things to note:

March Madness means different things to different people. Some are filling out brackets using their best sense to determine which team will come out on top. He goes above and beyond to donate his time, resources and knowledge for the betterment of our community every day. He has been a strong leader on the Indianola Chamber of Commerce board of directors for several years, as well as holds leadership roles for many other Indianola organizations. His leadership at Hy-Vee is unparalleled. His employees have nothing but wonderful things to say about him, which is a key part of every successful organization.”

• Indianola Emerging Business of the Year – Willow Moon Apothecary, owner Brandy Werner. “This person is the type of business owner you want in a community. She’s active, forward-thinking and event minded. Her storefront is welcoming and she offers many unique products. Not only does this business have a strong social media presence, she excels at marketing her products in a visually appealing way. Located just off the Square, the shop revitalized a building, extended shopping offerings and has brought new life to the Indianola Square.”

• Steven G. Pfeifer Volunteer of the Year – Rick Barnard. “Rick’s commitment to the Indianola Booster Club can be attributed to its success for 30 years. He has shared his financial expertise with the organization from his career at the State Auditor’s office. The knowledge it takes to properly operate a non-profit can make or break any club or organization. He knows the rules to a tee and helps support the board to make responsible decisions.”

• Educator of the Year – Kent Halstead. “This teacher brings history to life – connecting students’ lives to their community. His class is seldom sitting down. They are up and collaborating with each other – creating and designing activities to learn by doing. He sets clear expectations – students will have fun while learning. He brings great energy to the school and does the same as a successful coach for Indianola High School.”

December is a good time to reflect upon 2021 and plan for 2022. It’s also a perfect time to pause and give thanks for our family, friends and countless blessings, not to mention share some comfort, joy, and gratitude. So, as you reflect, take a moment to see how you can spread some holiday cheer to others and to ask yourself what you truly are grateful for this year.

Indianola for the Holidays

The Indianola Downtown Square has been under renovation for the past several years. First came the Warren County Justice Center project and then the addition of the Indianola downtown renovation project. Progress is underway to fulfill the vision, andas expected, with every construction project comes inconvenience. I can’t thank our business owners enough who have shown resilience and patience and have weatheredthrough the construction as two monumental projects transform the downtown area. I also want to thank our loyal residents who continue to support their favorite downtown stores regardless of the road and side-walk closures and changes in parking.

In fact, I think it’s time we celebrate! I’m not talking just about the holidays, but also completion of the first phase of the Indianola renovation and streetscape project in mid-late November.

Instead of making a list with pre-determined items, why not revert to the days when we shoppedpurposely to find that perfect gift for those on our lists? Or, why not intentionally gift items you know you can find in your favorite local stores on or off the square. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a local gift card.

We challenge you to Look Local for All of your gifts before going anywhere else. Nobody does Black Friday or Small Business Saturday (November 26-27) better than our Indianola stores. Remember, what you spend here stays here to support our business owners, schools, roads, and other important infrastructure projects.

Open for Business and Hiring

The Indianola Chamber has been an important force in making Indianola the best place to live, work and raise a family for over 100 years. Throughout the years, the Chamber leadership has continued its focus to make Indianola even better by tackling the issues at hand.

Our issue today? Workforce. Take a drive around town and you’ll find “We’re Hiring” signs everywhere. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, for the first time in 21 years, the number of available jobs surpassed the number of job takers. This discrepancy is holding our economy back.

Have you experienced longer than normal wait times at your favorite restaurants? Have you had longer than normal lines at the check-out? Have you noticed that restaurants, retail stores, or other businesses have cut their hours of operation or have reduced their service capacity? Have you ordered items for projects only to discover what was once a week is now months to receive? You can bet our workforce shortage is at least partially responsible for all of these inconveniences. Early retirements, individuals leaving the workforce due to daycare issues, families learning to live on less, disconnect of worker skills matching job requirements, and semi-retired individuals choosing to fully retire are just a few reasons why our workforce is shrinking.

The answer to this issue isn’t easy, nor short. At some point, some of those leaving the workforce may choose to reenter. The problem is when. Those that don’t have skills matching jobs can be retrained, but how long will it take to retrain our workers and for them to adapt to the new jobs’ required skills? The answers simply bring more questions.

What can you do to help? If you aren’t in the workforce or know of someone able to work but isn’t currently, check out the available jobs at indianolajobs.com and reenter the workforce. If you commute to another city to work, consider finding a job in Indianola. If you have a teenager 15 years of age or older, encourage them to consider a part-time job. You are likely to find employers who are eager to work with every job applicant.

If you are an employer with a job opening, post your job on indianolajobs.com . The Chamber is offering the job board free to all Indianola businesses. We sincerely hope to be part of the solution in connecting job seekers with local jobs. The more jobs posted on our site, the easier it will be for job seekers to connect with you.

Back to School Bash, sponsored by the Indianola Community Youth Foundation, on August 21, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Indianola High School Stadium. Plan to meet the Indians at 7 p.m. Plan to “Meet the Indians” (fall athletes) and get ready to support our local sporting activities. Then, enjoy the movie “Field of Dreams” on the Indianola Football Field! This is a FREE community event. Food trucks and concessions available at your own cost.

We're Open For Business

The Indianola Downtown Square is Open for Business, getting some badly needed upgrades so our businesses and residents will have a safe place to gather. But with every construction project, comes a little inconvenience.

When you visit our businesses on the Downtown Square, remember that there is on-street and/or public parking lots available just one block off each side of the square. During each Phase of the project certain streets will be closed. While the roads are under construction the sidewalks will be open, and you can still access all of our downtown businesses. Watch for signage to help guide you. Once the roads are completed, the sidewalks will be replaced and yes, you will still have access to your favorite businesses. Will it be as convenient during construction probably not. But, please remember our loyal businesses have supported this community for years, and you can support them now by continuing to buy local. Many are offering delivery, back door entry and are willing to make other arrangements to serve you. Please continue to support these businesses during this short period. Follow them on Face Book as they provide you with instructions on how to visit them. If mother nature is kind Phase 1 will be done before we know it.

Businesses around town, too, are Open and ready to serve consumers who are more than ready to return to normal activities. Yet, many of our businesses are now facing new challenges – a shortage of workers, certain products, not to mention supply and distribution issues. Some restaurants, for example, are running at 60% capacity or closed during certain days of the week, not because of public health guidelines, but because they don’t have enough employees to serve their customers. While you are out and find yourself standing in lines at a retail store, have longer than normal waits or slower than normal service at any business, please have patience and be kind. Instead of complaining show your appreciation with a smile and some warm thoughts. Those workers and businesses are doing their best to serve you.

Finally, our events are in full swing and Open for Business. As we move into our event season, I invite you to take advantage of all of our local entertainment. Whether its enjoying a world class opera at the Des Moines Metro Opera, feasting on a corn dog at the Warren County Fair, or catching the breathtaking view as hundreds of balloons take to the sky during the National Balloon Classic, there’s something here, in Indianola, for you. #ThinkIndianolaFirst

Summer Sizzles in Indianola

I’m not sure about you, but I am ready for summer. Indianola has always been a powerhouse for summer events, and we have a great lineup. Not only that, but we have other economic development projects happening around town that will have a positive, long-term affect on our local economy. We are the envy of many communities as we progressively elevate Indianola by investing in our community to attract business, industry and people to live, work and raise families here.

This summer the Indianola Downtown Square will get a badly needed upgrade. Did you know that we have underground water lines on The Square that are 100 years old? It’s time to replace them. The good news is it won’t cost us a dime in taxes, and the best news is we will have a better, safer downtown district that will attract more tax-paying businesses and happy shoppers to our square.

Updating outdated infrastructure is an economic driver for growth, and it’s now more important than ever for our community to focus on place-based economic development. Again, the good news is that after the project is complete, Indianola will have a great place to host events, a place for people to gather, and a safe place for businesses to thrive.

Yes, it’s an investment but 82% ($8.3m) of the cost of the project will secure the safety of residents and businesses and 18% ($1.9m) goes towards beautification. The renovation project is being funded through grants, Tax Increment Financing (TIF), utilities, and local option sales tax. Again, it will not raise our taxes. Who’s ready for some winter fun? Is anyone else ready to get out of the house? I know I am. Cabin fever tends to set in January and February each year in Iowa for many of us. How about a safe, fun activity for your family and the entire community to enjoy?

Nola is a witty mannequin who loves to see the sights and wants to share her adventure with us. She is always on the move, elusive, tends to get lost, and often needs rescued.

Your mission is Finding Nola. The question is, how? It’s pretty simple!

Watch for clues posted every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting February 5th on the Indianola Chamber of Commerce Face Book Page (@IndianolaChamberofCommerce) and/or Instagram (indianolachamber). Follow the clues to find Nola. You have until the following Wednesday night to find her. After that, Nola will begin exploring again to find her next destination.
If you find Nola, take a picture with her, share it to your Face Book page and/or Instagram and tag the Indianola Chamber of Commerce and business or location where you find her.

March Madness Drives Gratitude and Optimism

I don’t know about you, but I find myself wishing for things I can’t control, grateful for those things that matter, and optimistic about the future! I guess, we all probably do.

I find myself wishing for warmer weather because January and February were beyond cold. Yet, I am grateful for everyone who took advantage of winter by doing fun outdoor activities like ice skating, sledding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, or building a snowman. As we move into March, I am optimistic about spring and warmer temperatures knowing that even if it does snow, it won’t last long.

I find myself wishing that this pandemic public health crisis is nothing more than a bad dream or even better over. Yet, I find myself filled with gratitude for our front-line workers that include our medical professionals, teachers, police, fire fighters, childcare providers, other essential workers, and for those who stepped up to help those in need. I am also grateful for our residents who supported our local businesses, and for our businesses who adjusted quickly to continue to serve you. I am optimistic that our businesses will continue to recover, although that depends on all of us. I ask everyone to continue to Look Local and Buy Local. When you support our local businesses you also help grow our local economy. Dollars spent in Indianola not only help our local businesses, but the Sales Tax collected benefits our schools, roads, and other city infrastructure projects.

When you think about it, if you make purchases outside of Indianola or Warren County, you are giving residents in other cities those benefits. Why would we do that? Think about what you purchase online or at businesses outside of Indianola and thoughtfully shift what you already spend locally. Be intentional and #ThinkIndianolaFirst before going anywhere else!

I find myself wishing that life had returned to normal, yet I know that many things will return to a new normal. At the same time, I am grateful for our local business leaders who continue to work hard not to just return things to normal, but to embrace change and make a better normal.

I am optimistic we soon can gather with family and friends, attend community events, shop and eat out, and embrace new experiences and opportunities. But, we must be mindful that these gatherings will require the new normal safety practices – get vaccinated when it’s your time, wear a mask, keep a safe distance, and wash your hands. It’s because of these new normal precautions that we can get on with our lives!

It’s A New Year – Let’s Celebrate

2020 Chamber Awards

2020 was a tough year for many of us and our communities. We’ve lost friends. We’ve lost family. Some of our businesses have lost income and individuals have lost jobs. It’s not been easy by any stretch of the imagination. But when I look around, I also see resilience, hope and ambition. I’ve seen compassion, kindness, and generosity against all odds. As a community, we stepped up to support our first responders, health care workers, Helping Hand, and individuals and families who needed help. Many of our small businesses got a boost from secret Santa who stepped forward to share some holiday cheer with them. Thank you to everyone who helped.

Our businesses will respond. Our community will expand. And like every pivotal moment in history, our businesses and community will come back stronger than ever. Our Chamber will be there to help.

So, while we reflect on 2020, it’s time to celebrate. Each year, the Chamber accepts nominations, recognizes and celebrates businesses and individuals who have made significant contributions to our community. We are happy to announce the winners! Congratulations to:

We thank Erin and Jane for continuing to prosper, adding a new attraction, and fulfilling much needed retail space on the Indianola square.”

Pfeifer Volunteer of the Year – Jim Fromm. “For all the organizations and activities in which he is involved in, Jim epitomizes what an ideal board and or committee member should be: present, reliable, committed, hard-working, and never afraid to roll up his sleeves and get involved. If a job needs done, whether it be project-based or spur-of-the-moment, Jim is a go-to person one can always rely on.”
Educator of the Year – Alison Sauter. “When COVID-19 had the district scrambling to plan and deliver remote instruction, “Ask Ali,” was probably uttered thousands of times. The value she has added to the district and the work she has done during this difficult period is phenomenal.”
