A Masked Ball Giuseppe Verdi
Performed in Italian with English supertitles
King Gustavus must choose between the loyal friendship of his trusted secretary, Anckarström, and his unrequited love for Anckarström's beautiful wife, Amelia. Meanwhile, the winds of political intrigue swirl around the king, as talk of assassination mounts. Combined with the fortune teller Ulrica's prediction that grave misfortune awaits Gustavus, the plot weaves these threads into the kind of drama that is found only in grand opera. This is another heroic work by Giuseppe Verdi, and one not to be missed on the DMMO stage.

Des Moines Metro Opera Presents: Regina Location: Blank Performing Arts Center, Simpson College 2:00 PM
Regina Marc Blizstein
Performed in English with English supertitles
Marc Blitzstein's Regina, based on the Lillian Hellman play The Little Foxes, captures the sounds of early twentieth century America in a score filled with jazz, ragtime and spiritual flavor. Set against the backdrop of the Deep South, where land equaled power, the opera delves into the frailty of humankind, from the lust for money to the heartbreak of faded memories in one Southern family with dreams of the good life. Hellman called the work “the most original of American operas, the most daring.” Many call it an American masterpiece.
